research ethics

Because I want to incorporate guided movement with children into my project this was some very helpful information. Children are able to say whether or not they want to participate in an activity but truly aren't able to supply "informed consent" because, well they can't quite be informed. Understanding what they're participating is the job of their parents; it is my job to make this understood. Reducing risks and coming up with a simple, describable activity is my task. I can't sit down with each parent and have a question and answer session. I can do that with the teachers at the day school but not with each parent. This is actually making me consider doing the group performance piece. I feel that it would be easier to have a line of communication about what we're undertaking with a group of people (of many ages!) who have clearly taken the project on. I feel like it would be very possible to simply bring movement activity to the day school without necessarily making it a research project, except in the sense that I am the subject of the research. It really is about practice and experimenting with my facilitating techniques than observing and recording changes in the children.

Abstract, Draft 2

This thesis/project is an exploration, through both observation and academic research, of how bodily awareness and movement are aligned with the experience of trust. Many psychological ideas of trust are examined. Developmental psychophysical research is considered. What about our physical sensations, especially the impetus to move, correlates with a sense of security? Facilitating group movement and dance for children attending a local developmental day-school will act as a means of applying and personally experiencing discoveries and connections made in research. Can dancing, or simply moving in response to others, help children to develop trust as it is psychologically described? Special attention is given to how early development of motor skills/habits interacts with early development of emotional and social skills/habits.

Abstract-perhaps premature?

I have not spoken with Derek, yet...yeah, I know...but, here's an abstract anyways.

Group movement and dance are a viable means for
helping people in all stages of development experience trust. I will be doing research on the varied ideas
of and demarcations of psychological trust.
In addition, I will be exploring, both through observation and academic
research, how body movement relates to emotional development and
well-being. Most of my observations will
be of young children. I will be doing
movement activities with different age groups at the Sugar Grove Developmental
Day School.Members of my community will
join me for informal “movement” events, and I will develop a before and after
questionnaire to help me understand whether or not individuals experienced
trust, and what about the activity allowed/disallowed each of them to do so. By the end of this project/thesis I aim to be
able to state with confidence that, ‘how we perceive our body in the space we
are in correlates to how we perceive ourselves in the environment we are in.’

Trust website

I found this on Wikipedia!  And there's just more and more threads here.
I've decided to work with the idea of basic trust, and this source should be quite helpful.

Jealous of the Shoemaker

I swear, sometimes I just want to be an accountant. I have always liked math.  The temptation to follow a 'career path' that has already been blazed, paved, and added to the atlas is similar to fast food.  It just seems so much easier.  I really don't know how this idea of mine is going to play out, and the predictability of a more cut-and-dried job path sounds like falling asleep with my shoes on after a REALLY long day.

Idea #4

A more specific topic for a thesis would be to explore the idea of basic trust and how the MANY different takes on this can be used in Movement Therapy with ALL ages.

Idea #3

I can't imagine emerging from this class without a big ol' bunch of papers choc full o my ramblings (perfectly articulated and organized of course!).  At this point, I would like to reflect on how what I have learned here at ASU can be applied to work as a Dance or Movement Therapist.  With some exceptions, I think I could include nearly every bit o learning I've done here so far.
